Description: The presented study identifies a novel 18-residue peptide, GRFN-1, that manifests potent anti-HIV-1 activity. Its low toxicity, limited hemolytic/proinflammatory properties, activity against CCR5 and CXCR4 HIV-1 strains and relatively small size identifies it as a strong lead candidate for further development as HIV-1 entry inhibitor for topical or systemic applications. A novel HIV-1 entry inhibitor, grifonin-1 (GRFN-1), that was obtained by modifying and truncating the naturally occurring lectin, griffithsin.
