Description: Among AMPs, linear cationic peptides such as magainins are particularly attractive for microbial sensing applications because of their small molecular size and intrinsic stability. In particular, the positively charged AMP magainin I (GIGKFLHSAGKFGKAFVGEIMKS) binds most selectively to the bacterial cell E. coli O157∶H7 as a precursor to bactericidal activity. Magainin I also displays broad-spectrum activity toward other Gram-negative bacteria, which comprise the majority of pathogenic infection in humans.
