Description: The classical tachykinins, substance P, neurokinin A and neurokinin B are predominantly found in the nervous system where they act as neurotransmitters and neuromodulators. Significantly reduced levels of these peptides were observed in neurodegenerative diseases. Neurokinin A proved to be an extremely potent inhibitor of drinking elicited by subcutaneous administration of hypertonic NaCl, and produced also a statistically-significant inhibition of food-associated drinking. Recent European investigations have shown that persistently elevated (>50 pg/mL) plasma neurokinin A levels are associated with poor short-term survival in patients with midgut neuroendocrine neoplasms.
