Description: Orexins are neuropeptides discovered simultaneously in 1998 by two independent research groups, one of which named them orexins (A and B) and the other hypocretins (hypocretin-1 and hypocretin-2). Orexins A (33 amino acids) and B (28 amino acids) are proteolytically processed from a common precursor peptide, preproorexin. Orexin (OX) B provides partial but significant protection to spontaneously dying dopamine (DA) neurons whereas the homologous peptide OXA has only marginal effects.
