Description: The neuropeptide proctolin (RYLPT) was discovered in the cockroach, Periplaneta americana, where it was considered a neurotransmitter associated with hindgut visceral muscle. Proctolin was the first insect neuropeptide to be sequenced and is now known to be widely distributed in the nervous systems of arthropods and to be extremely active on a variety of arthropod muscle preparations. Many biological processes are influenced by proctolin, and proctolin is involved in regulating central neurons, and muscles associated with posture, and the digestive, reproductive, and circulatory systems. Proctolin may also be a neurohormone and may also act as a hormone-releasing factor.
