Description: Salmon calcitonin (sCT) has approximately 50 % amino acid homology to hCT but has anti-resorptive properties in human bone approximately 40 times as potent as those of hCT and a longer half-life. It is these properties of sCT that have allowed its use for decades as a therapeutic agent for postmenopausal osteoporosis, Paget’s disease, and other diseases of bone. sCT was first licensed for use in the USA in 1975. The most commonly used form of sCT, nasal spray, has been used in the USA for approximately 20 years and is currently indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis in women greater than 5 years postmenopause when alternative treatments are not suitable.
