Description: Magainin 2 (MAG2)  has been studied extensively for almost 30 years now. MAG2 was found to have broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity.  It binds to the surface of anionic lipid bilayers mainly through electrostatic interactions, where it causes thinning and, eventually, disruption of the membrane potential and cell lysis. Many synthetic analogs of magainin-2 have been developed to maximize the broad spectrum activity of the peptide in hopes of developing a clinically useful antimicrobial therapeutic agent.
