Description: Ceratotoxin A (CtxA) has been shown to be highly active against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and to permeabilize the outer and inner membranes of E. coli. These antimicrobial properties are well correlated with high levels of pore-forming activity. Indeed, macroscopic and single-channel conductances indicate that ceratotoxin A forms voltage-dependent ion channels in planar lipid bilayers according to the barrel stave model.
