Description: Protegrins are antimicrobial peptides isolated from porcine leukocytes. The most studied of these is the 18-residue protegrin-1 (PG1), whose structure has been shown to be a β-hairpin stabilized by two disulfide bonds. It is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi in vitro ( 1 and 3), but is also modestly hemolytic.
