Description: The neuroendocrine hormone secretin is secreted by S cells that are localized primarily in the mucosa of the duodenum. Exogenous secretin is known to potentiate many effects of CCK in the pancreas, including pancreatic acinar cell enzyme secretion in some species and pancreatic growth in response to exogenous CCK or caerulein, a CCK analog. Secretin is a gastro-intestinal hormone which has been presented as an effective treatment for autism based on anecdotal evidence.
